WhatsApp May No Longer Be Free: Users May Have to Pay to Run Status, Ads for Non-Subscribers

WhatsApp, the messaging app used by millions worldwide, may soon introduce a subscription model, according to reports. The change, revealed through the code of WhatsApp version 2.26.3.9, will primarily affect the Status feature, not messaging itself.

Subscription Model for Ad-Free Status
Under the upcoming model, users who subscribe to WhatsApp will enjoy an ad-free Status experience. Non-subscribers, however, will see advertisements in their Status tab. While sending messages will remain free, users who wish to avoid ads in Status updates may have to pay a subscription fee.

This move comes as WhatsApp continues to explore ways to monetize its platform while maintaining its massive user base. Despite user concerns, the company has reportedly been working on this feature for a long time.

Details from WhatsApp Code
Analysis of WhatsApp’s beta version 2.26.3.9 has revealed hidden code indicating the possibility of a “paid ad-free subscription”. This means that while core messaging will remain free, viewing Status updates without ads could require payment.

Timeline for Launch
There is no official announcement yet from WhatsApp regarding the rollout of this subscription model. Experts suggest that the model may not launch immediately, but it appears likely that WhatsApp will introduce it in the future.

WhatsApp Business Users Already Use Ads
WhatsApp Business, a separate app for commercial users, already allows businesses to promote their products through ads. Currently, these ads appear on Meta platforms like Facebook and Instagram. With the introduction of a subscription model, similar advertising may extend to regular WhatsApp users who do not opt for the paid plan.

This potential change marks a significant shift for WhatsApp, which has long been a free messaging platform, signaling a new era of monetization through subscription and ad-based models.
