UK May Ban Elon Musk’s X Platform Over AI Misuse: Prime Minister Signals Action

The United Kingdom is considering a potential ban on Elon Musk’s social media platform, X, following concerns over misuse of its AI tool, Grok. Reports indicate that the AI has been used to generate explicit and objectionable images, including content involving women and children, prompting a stern response from the government.

Prime Minister Warns of Possible Block
According to Independent.co.uk, UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has hinted that X could be blocked in the country due to the “illegal and disgusting” content produced using the Grok AI tool. Speaking to Greatest Hits Radio, the Prime Minister emphasized that such content is unacceptable and that all options are under consideration. He called on X to rectify the situation and remove offending content immediately, warning that further inaction would not be tolerated.

Global Backlash Against Grok AI
The controversy surrounding Grok AI has sparked international concern. The tool has reportedly been used repeatedly to create inappropriate images of individuals without their consent. The Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) confirmed that Grok AI was even used to generate objectionable images of children aged 11 to 13. Following these developments, Ofcom has reached out to the tech company to address serious regulatory concerns.

Legal Framework for a Ban
Under the Online Safety Act, in severe cases and with court approval, Ofcom—the UK’s independent regulator for broadcasting, telecommunications, postal, and online services—has the authority to order internet service providers, advertisers, and payment platforms to cease supporting a website. Such action would effectively block the platform in the UK. Ofcom ensures user safety, content standards, privacy protection, and service quality for citizens and businesses.

Government Pressure on X Intensifies
UK ministers are reportedly pressuring the platform to comply fully. Former Transport Secretary Lewis Hey warned that continued use of X violates government policy. On Friday, Minister Anna Turley confirmed ongoing discussions about the possibility of leaving the platform entirely.
