Tech News – January 21, 2026: Is the OnePlus Era Ending? Sony Partners with TCL, Musk and Altman Clash Over ChatGPT

OnePlus on the Brink?
Reports suggest that OnePlus could soon exit the smartphone market. Android Headlines claimed that the brand, once launched independently from BBK and Oppo, may follow the footsteps of HTC and LG, which have already shut down their smartphone operations. Recent news indicates that upcoming devices like the OnePlus 15s and OnePlus Open 2 may not launch this year. For several years, OnePlus has struggled to maintain its market share, and Oppo may be looking to absorb losses from the brand. According to reports, even if OnePlus closes, customers would continue to receive software and hardware updates.

The brand has also faced multiple challenges recently: a warrant against its CEO in Taiwan, taxation issues linked to green line display defects, and persistent social media speculation about major organizational changes.

Sony’s TVs to Be Manufactured by China’s TCL
Sony has announced a new venture in collaboration with Chinese company TCL to produce Bravia TVs. Under the new arrangement, TCL will hold a majority stake, while Sony’s involvement will be largely limited to branding. The venture is expected to begin operations in April 2027. While this partnership could result in more affordable Bravia TVs, questions remain about whether consumers will trust a Chinese manufacturer with Sony’s renowned quality.

Elon Musk vs. Sam Altman: ChatGPT Controversy
Elon Musk recently warned users on social media to exercise caution while using ChatGPT, citing concerns over AI potentially encouraging harmful behaviors. Sam Altman, co-founder of OpenAI, responded by emphasizing the company’s efforts to balance safety with accessibility. He highlighted that nearly a billion users rely on ChatGPT, some of whom may be in vulnerable mental states, and urged respectful handling of such sensitive situations. Altman also addressed incidents involving Tesla’s autopilot and Musk’s AI chatbot Grok, leaving no stone unturned in the ongoing exchange.
