Successful Surgery on 4 Patients from 1,200 km Away: 5G and Tele-Robotics Bridge Delhi–Gujarat Distance

In a groundbreaking medical achievement, four surgeries on patients in Delhi were successfully performed remotely by surgeons located 1,200 kilometers away in Vapi, Gujarat, using 5G technology and tele-robotic systems. Medical experts say this milestone demonstrates how high-speed internet combined with advanced robotics can overcome geographical barriers and expand access to specialized care.

Remote Surgeons at Work
The surgeries took place at Gangaram Hospital, where all instruments were set up in the operation theater (OT). Remarkably, the surgeons were not physically present at the OT. Instead, they operated the robotic systems from Vapi. Each of the four surgeons performed separate procedures:

  • Dr. Vipin Tyagi addressed a kidney obstruction.
  • Dr. Tarun Mittal performed gallbladder surgery.
  • Dr. Anmol Ahuja handled a hernia operation.
  • Dr. Mukund Khetan conducted another gallbladder surgery.

This achievement highlights how tele-robotic surgery can compensate for the lack of local experts, providing access to advanced surgical care even in distant locations.

How Tele-Robotic Surgery Works
Tele-robotic surgery relies on a two-part system: one part with surgical instruments placed inside the patient, and another console operated by the surgeon. Traditionally, both components are in the same OT. In this case, the console was located in Vapi, while the instruments remained in Delhi. The high-speed 5G connection enabled real-time precision and control, allowing the surgeons to perform complex procedures safely.

Future Implications
Dr. Tyagi noted that such technology could significantly benefit smaller cities and towns. With proper equipment and internet connectivity, expert surgeons can provide advanced care without being physically present. During the surgeries, top experts were on-site in Delhi as a precaution, ensuring patient safety and addressing any unforeseen complications.

The success of these four remote surgeries marks a historic first in India, signaling a future where tele-robotic interventions could become a standard solution for bridging healthcare gaps across the country.
