The world’s richest man, Elon Musk, has issued a warning against using popular messaging apps WhatsApp and Signal, urging users to switch to his platform X Chat instead. Musk’s caution comes in the wake of a lawsuit filed against Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, alleging the theft of users’ chat data.
Musk Advises Users to Abandon WhatsApp and Signal
Musk, through a post on his social media platform X, stated that users should stop using WhatsApp and Signal, and instead adopt X Chat. The warning was prompted by a recent lawsuit against Meta, which claims that WhatsApp chats are not as secure as advertised. While Signal offers similar messaging services, Musk included it in his caution, highlighting concerns over data privacy and security.
Why Musk Raised Concerns
Elon Musk’s warning specifically targeted WhatsApp and Signal’s security features. Commenting on a user post that discussed the Meta lawsuit, Musk advised against using both platforms, emphasizing the growing risks associated with their messaging services.
The Meta Lawsuit Explained
The lawsuit, filed in a U.S. district court, has brought WhatsApp’s security claims under scrutiny. Users from countries including India, Australia, and Brazil jointly filed the case, alleging that WhatsApp messages are not genuinely private. Contrary to Meta’s claims that messages are only accessible to the intended recipient, the lawsuit asserts that Meta stores, analyses, and can access users’ private chats. Whistleblowers have accused the company of misleading millions of users under the guise of privacy. Meta, however, has dismissed the allegations as “absurd and false,” maintaining that it has used the Signal encryption protocol for over a decade.
Should You Switch to X Chat?
The controversy centers on encryption and user privacy. If Meta loses the lawsuit, it could become one of the biggest tech scandals to date. While Musk has raised serious concerns about WhatsApp and Signal, he has not clarified how X Chat protects user data. Experts suggest that users should wait for the outcome of the lawsuit before making any decisions regarding a shift to X Chat or other platforms.
