Say Goodbye to Scam Wedding Cards and Hackers: WhatsApp Launches ‘Strict Mode’ to Protect Users from Cyber Fraud

Meta has introduced a new ‘Strict Account Settings’ feature for WhatsApp users, designed to shield them from digital scams, including fake wedding invitations and phishing attempts. Once enabled, this feature essentially puts WhatsApp in a lockdown mode, making it extremely difficult for hackers or unknown contacts to access your messages, media, or calls.

How Does Strict Mode Work?
Strict Mode acts as an extreme security barrier for your WhatsApp account. When turned on:

  • Unknown contacts outside your saved list cannot send attachments, media, or messages.
  • You are protected from phishing links, scam wedding cards, and spyware attempts.
  • Unknown users cannot add you to groups without your permission.

Meta has implemented this feature using the Rust programming language, which ensures that your photos, videos, and messages remain safe from malware or spyware. However, users are advised that call and messaging functionality may be slightly restricted, as security takes top priority in this mode.

Inspired by Apple and Android Security Features
WhatsApp is not the first to introduce such a security layer. Apple launched Lockdown Mode in 2022, while Android rolled out Advanced Protection Mode last year, which keeps Google Play Protect active and blocks apps installed via sideloading. WhatsApp’s Strict Mode combines elements from both these approaches to offer robust protection for everyday messaging.

How to Enable Strict Mode on WhatsApp
Enabling the feature is simple:

  1. Update WhatsApp to the latest version.
  2. Go to Settings → Privacy → Advanced.
  3. Click on ‘Strict Account Settings’, accept WhatsApp’s terms, and set a 6-digit PIN.
  4. This PIN acts as a key to protect your account from any suspicious changes.

With this update, WhatsApp users can now safely interact online without worrying about scams or unauthorized access, making the platform significantly more secure.
