Can ordinary button-based phones become smart? Indian AI company Sarvam AI is planning to bring its AI models to Nokia feature phones and HMD devices, offering AI-powered assistance even on basic phones. These edge models can work offline, allowing users to access information about government schemes, markets, or other services in their local language at the press of a button.
AI for Most Phones
At the India AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi, Sarvam AI revealed that its edge AI models are compact and require just a few megabytes of space. They are compatible with most existing phone processors and can operate offline in many cases, making AI accessible even on budget devices.
Dedicated AI Button on Phones
Sarvam AI is collaborating with HMD Global to integrate a dedicated AI button on feature phones. In a demo video, users pressed this button to interact with the AI assistant in their local language for guidance on government schemes or local market information. While some features may require internet connectivity, many are designed to function offline.
Expanding AI to Cars, Laptops, and IoT Devices
Tushar Goswami, Head of Edge AI at Sarvam, stated that the company aims to bring intelligence to every device, including phones, laptops, cars, and next-generation devices. The AI models are being developed in collaboration with Qualcomm, which is working on a Sovereign AI Experience Suite compatible across phones, PCs, laptops, cars, and IoT devices.
Additionally, Sarvam AI is partnering with German engineering giant Bosch to integrate AI assistants into cars. If successful, this initiative will mark a first for an Indian AI company, providing intelligent assistance on devices that global companies have not yet targeted.
