Samsung’s Sharp-Edged Phone Ripping Pockets: The Strange Trouble with Galaxy S24 Ultra

Have you ever heard of a phone tearing people’s pants? If not, Samsung’s Galaxy S24 Ultra has made headlines for exactly that. The phone’s sharp edges have reportedly started creating holes in users’ pockets, sparking curiosity and concern across social media.

Sharp Edges, Costly Damage
While the rising prices of smartphones are known to strain wallets, the S24 Ultra has taken a surprising turn by damaging users’ clothing. Internet users have shared images of ripped pockets and torn pants on platforms like Reddit, claiming the phone’s sharp corners as the culprit. This premium device was the last in Samsung’s lineup to feature sharp edges, with its successor, the S25 Ultra, moving to a curved design.

How the S24 Ultra Tears Pockets
According to users, the S24 Ultra can damage pants when repeatedly rubbed against the same angle inside a pocket. Many had purchased the device during sales last year, and now blame the phone for the fabric damage. While sharp-edged phones can potentially cause pocket tears, it usually requires repeated friction in the same spot to happen.

Design Drawbacks and User Experience
Beyond pocket damage, many users found the S24 Ultra uncomfortable to hold for long periods. The sharp corners reportedly caused minor discomfort when gripping the phone. This feedback influenced Samsung to curve the edges of the S25 Ultra. Nevertheless, some users appreciated the S24 Ultra’s “notebook-like” design, which made it stand out in the premium smartphone lineup. Since then, Samsung has not released any notebook-style phones in its flagship series.

Will the Sharp-Edge Design Return?
Samsung is set to launch the Galaxy S26 Ultra next month, featuring slightly softer and curved corners. This suggests that the ultra-series may no longer return to a sharp-cornered design. However, users who preferred the notebook-style form factor of the S24 Ultra may gravitate toward Samsung’s Fold series, such as the Galaxy Fold 7, which retains the familiar notebook-like design.

The S24 Ultra’s unusual issue serves as a reminder that smartphone design, no matter how sleek, can sometimes have unexpected—and very tangible—effects on everyday life.
