Parental Control Comes to WhatsApp: New Feature Lets Parents Manage Kids’ Accounts Safely

WhatsApp is gearing up to launch a new feature for children, giving parents the ability to oversee and manage their child’s account while keeping their privacy intact. The upcoming feature, called Primary Controls, is designed to enhance online safety for kids without breaching the security of their private conversations.

How the Feature Works

According to reports from WABetaInfo, the new system will allow parents to link their child’s WhatsApp account as a secondary account to their own primary account. Through this digital link, parents will be able to:

  • Review and manage privacy settings that children might overlook
  • Apply age-appropriate restrictions on messaging and calling
  • Limit communications to approved contacts only

Importantly, parents will not have access to the child’s personal messages or calls. End-to-end encryption will continue to protect all conversations, ensuring that children’s chats remain private. Parents will receive activity reports to monitor usage patterns and ensure safety, without intruding on their child’s private communications.

Why This Feature Matters

Currently, WhatsApp does not allow users to restrict messages to selected contacts or monitor online activity in a child-safe way. The secondary account system addresses this gap, giving parents a clear and manageable overview of their child’s online interactions.

Testing and Development

The feature is still in development. WhatsApp is testing how parental controls integrate with existing account settings to ensure a smooth and user-friendly experience. The interface is being optimized so parents can easily configure secondary accounts, set appropriate age-based restrictions, and enhance their child’s online security.

When launched, this update will make WhatsApp safer for children while maintaining the privacy and autonomy of their personal conversations—allowing parents to guide without spying.
