In a rare move for a major streaming platform, Netflix has reuploaded Ranveer Singh’s blockbuster film Dhurandhar after widespread complaints about poor picture quality in its initial OTT release. The film, which grossed over ₹1,000 crore at the box office and premiered on Netflix this weekend, drew immediate criticism from viewers who said the colors looked washed out and the video quality appeared unusually low.
Following a wave of online backlash, Netflix replaced the version within 48 hours with a significantly upgraded stream.
Bitrate Issue Behind Poor Quality
According to viewer reports circulating on social media platform X, the original version of the film was streaming at a bitrate of approximately 1.79 Mbps, far below industry expectations for a high-budget cinematic release. After the upgrade, the bitrate was reportedly increased to 12.56 Mbps — nearly six times higher.
The higher bitrate dramatically improved sharpness, color depth, and overall clarity. Viewers say the updated version now delivers a more theatrical experience, with better contrast and enhanced detail, especially in darker scenes.
Experts explain that bitrate determines how much visual data is processed per second during playback. A low bitrate compresses the image heavily, leading to dull colors and blurred textures, while a higher bitrate preserves cinematic detail.
Codec and Color Grading Improvements
The updated release has also drawn praise for its improved AV1 codec optimization and corrected color grading. The original upload reportedly suffered from flat tones and weak contrast, making scenes appear lifeless compared to the theatrical version.
With the reupload, Netflix has adjusted dynamic range, deepened black levels, and restored vibrant color balance. Viewers say the changes significantly enhance Ranveer Singh’s on-screen presence and the film’s visual impact.
A Rare OTT Correction
Industry observers note that it is unusual for a major OTT platform to re-release a film so quickly after launch due to quality concerns. The swift correction highlights the growing importance of streaming quality standards, especially for big-budget productions transitioning from cinema to home screens.
The upgraded version of Dhurandhar is now live on Netflix, and early reactions suggest audiences are finally getting the cinematic experience they expected.
