Mobile Recharges Becoming Costlier: Prices Could Rise by 15% by June

Mobile users in India may soon face higher bills as telecom companies prepare to increase recharge tariffs. Industry leaders like Jio, Airtel, and Vi are reportedly planning to raise the cost of data and calling plans by up to 15% by June 2026. The companies cite rising 5G network expenses and lower per-user earnings as the primary reasons behind the hike.

Data and Calling Costs on the Rise
According to posts on Elon Musk’s social media platform X, telecom operators in India are implementing price hikes more frequently, with some users noting that tariffs are increasing every two months. This would mark a substantial increase in monthly mobile expenses for the average consumer. Social media users have expressed frustration, highlighting that mobile data is becoming as expensive as essential commodities like rice, wheat, and even gold.

From Free Services to Higher Costs
When telecom companies first entered the Indian market, they lured subscribers with free or low-cost data plans. As a result, India now has over 1.1 billion mobile users. With mobile internet now an integral part of daily life, companies are leveraging this dependency to increase their revenues.

The Business Case for Hike
Telecom operators argue that deploying 5G networks involves significant investment, while their average revenue per user (ARPU) remains low. Companies like Jio, Airtel, and Vi claim that the price adjustments are essential for sustaining their business operations.

Impact on Consumers and Regulatory Oversight
A sudden 15% increase in tariffs is likely to strain household budgets, prompting public calls for intervention by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). Regulators will need to balance the commercial interests of telecom operators with consumer protection. If recharge costs continue to rise at this pace, some experts suggest consumers might revert to landline usage in the future.

As of now, telecom companies have not officially commented on the proposed hikes.
