WhatsApp is reportedly working on a feature that will allow users to hide their phone numbers. Until this official feature arrives, there are four practical ways to keep your main number private and limit access from strangers. These methods can help reduce spam, unwanted calls, and messages.
1. Avoid Joining Groups with Your Primary Number
The easiest way strangers can get your number is through large WhatsApp groups. To protect your primary number, join groups using a secondary number, landline, or WhatsApp Business account instead. This minimizes exposure to unknown contacts.
2. Use an Alternate Number for Registration
Typically, WhatsApp accounts are linked to your primary number. However, your number does not have to be your main number. Registering with a secondary number allows you to chat without revealing your main number.
3. Register with a Landline Number
Many users are unaware that WhatsApp can also be used with landline numbers. During registration:
- Enter your landline number
- Select the “Call me” option for the verification code
- Answer the call on your landline and enter the code in WhatsApp
This way, your main mobile number stays hidden from anyone contacting you.
4. Use WhatsApp Business
For work-related chats, use the WhatsApp Business app. You can register it with a different number, keeping your personal number private while still using WhatsApp professionally.
Summary
Until WhatsApp officially allows number hiding, these four methods—avoiding primary-number groups, using alternate numbers, landline registration, and WhatsApp Business—are effective ways to protect your privacy and control who can access your main number.
