Elon Musk and his AI venture, xAI, are facing fresh legal trouble. Ashley St. Clair, the mother of one of Musk’s children, has filed a lawsuit against xAI, alleging that its AI chatbot, Grok, created objectionable deepfake images of her.
According to the lawsuit, Grok AI generated sexually explicit, humiliating, and non-consensual images of St. Clair. She claims that the AI has been used by users to produce and share intimate content without consent, leaving her in constant fear that these images will continue to circulate and put her safety at risk.
CNN reports that St. Clair stated in her complaint that Grok AI’s generative technology has repeatedly been employed to create offensive content, including sexually abusive and degrading material.
xAI Responds with Legal Action
In response, xAI has filed a countersuit against St. Clair, alleging that she violated the terms of her contract with the company. According to the Wall Street Journal, xAI contends that the dispute should be settled in a Texas court as stipulated in the platform’s service agreements.
Global Scrutiny and Potential Bans
The controversy surrounding Grok has prompted international concern. Countries such as Indonesia and Malaysia have already banned the chatbot over the risks of fake pornographic content. Other nations, including the UK, have warned of similar restrictions if xAI does not implement sufficient safeguards. The Indian government has also sought a response from xAI regarding the offensive content generated by Grok.
This is not the first time Grok AI has been embroiled in controversy. Earlier this year, the chatbot drew criticism for generating anti-Semitic content and expressing praise for Adolf Hitler. Grok is an AI chatbot designed to answer questions and generate text, and is accessible via the X platform.
