Government Takes Strict Action: Wingo App and Several Telegram Channels Blocked for Fraudulent SMS Activity

The Government of India has taken strong action against a cyber fraud network by blocking the Wingo app along with associated Telegram channels and YouTube content. Reports indicate that the app was defrauding users by luring them with promises of quick earnings and, without their knowledge, sending fraudulent SMS from their phones.

The move was executed by the Cyber Crime Coordination Centre under the Ministry of Home Affairs. Authorities have warned users that Wingo app trapped people with easy-money schemes, collected personal data, and misused devices to carry out fraud. Users who have installed this app are advised to uninstall it immediately.

How Wingo App Operated

  • Users were asked to complete small tasks to earn money in a short time.
  • The app required users to make investments via a personal wallet.
  • Complaints or large deposits would trigger the app to suddenly shut down and block accounts, making it a typical fraud scheme.

Spyware Allegations

Alongside fraud, the app faced privacy breach allegations:

  • Upon installation, Wingo accessed contacts, gallery, and location without necessity.
  • This allowed the app to misuse personal data and send fraudulent SMS from users’ phones.
  • The government blocked its servers in India and removed over 50 YouTube videos and four Telegram channels with 1.53 lakh followers.

Safety Guidelines for Users

The government has issued strict advice for Android users:

  1. Avoid downloading apps that promise guaranteed profits.
  2. Do not install apps that request unnecessary permissions like gallery or SMS access.
  3. Do not transfer money to unknown UPI IDs or share OTPs.

If anyone falls victim to such fraud, they should immediately call the helpline number 1930 or register a complaint on the official government portal. Users are urged to follow government advisories and avoid suspicious apps on their devices.
