Google has launched a new feature called “Personal Intelligence” in its AI model Gemini, which, when linked to apps like Gmail, Google Photos, YouTube, and Google Search, can assist users with personalized tasks. The feature has rolled out in the United States and is expected to launch soon in India and other countries.
What Personal Intelligence Does
Unlike traditional AI models that answer questions or provide information, Gemini’s Personal Intelligence acts as a personalized assistant. Once connected to Google apps, it can access your past emails, photos, videos, and search history to provide tailored help.
For instance, if you forget details about your car while at a store—such as the tire size or model—Personal Intelligence can instantly retrieve that information from your past emails or photos.
Real-Life Example
Josh Woodward, Vice President of Google Labs, Gemini, and AI Studio, gave an example: “Tom needed to replace his minivan’s tires but couldn’t remember the size. Gemini not only provided the tire size but also recommended which tires are suitable for daily use and which are better for long trips. By analyzing Tom’s Google Photos, Gemini understood that his family often goes on road trips, and tailored its advice accordingly.”
Privacy Remains a Priority
Privacy is a key concern, but Google has designed Personal Intelligence to be secure. The feature does not activate automatically; users can choose to enable or disable it and decide which apps it can access. Your emails, photos, and videos stay on Google’s servers and are not shared externally. Google does not use your data to train AI.
Currently, Personal Intelligence is in beta and may occasionally make assumptions. For example, if it sees multiple golf photos, it might assume you like golf. Users can correct these assumptions to improve accuracy.
How to Use It
The feature is currently available to Google AI Pro or AI Ultra subscribers in the U.S. It is not yet available for business, education, or corporate accounts. Once rolled out in India, users can open the Gemini app, go to Settings, tap Personal Intelligence, and connect apps like Gmail and Google Photos to start using it.
Conclusion
With Personal Intelligence, Gemini evolves from a general AI assistant into a personalized helper, capable of retrieving information and offering advice based on your own data—making everyday tasks smarter, faster, and more context-aware.
