Google is reportedly working on a major update to its Wallet app that will allow users to store their Aadhaar card digitally. The information comes from the app’s code, which references Aadhaar in multiple places, indicating that the feature could soon be officially rolled out. Once implemented, users will no longer need to carry a physical Aadhaar card, as it can be securely stored and accessed via Google Wallet.
What the Update Brings
Google Wallet already allows users to store credit cards, transit passes, and ID cards. With the addition of Aadhaar support, it aims to become a more comprehensive platform for both payments and digital document management. Users will be able to carry their Aadhaar card alongside other essential documents in a single app, reducing the need for multiple apps or physical copies.
Existing Aadhaar Support in Other Apps
Google Wallet will not be the first app to offer Aadhaar storage. Samsung Pay has already integrated the feature with help from DigiLocker, allowing users to store Aadhaar, driving licenses, and other important documents. DigiLocker itself and the official Aadhaar app also provide similar functionality, letting users maintain digital versions of their documents on smartphones.
User Benefits
The integration of Aadhaar into Google Wallet simplifies digital transactions and document storage by combining them in one place. Users will no longer need separate apps for payments and official document management, effectively turning Wallet into an all-in-one digital hub.
UI Enhancements
In addition to Aadhaar support, Google Wallet is expected to receive a UI update. The app is testing a new split-style Floating Action Button (FAB). Currently, Wallet has a single “Add to Wallet” button. The redesigned UI will feature two buttons—one for adding documents and another labeled “View More,” potentially linking to search or other features in the future.
This update marks a significant step toward making Google Wallet a more versatile and user-friendly platform for digital payments and personal document management in India.
