Google launched its latest A-series smartphone, the Pixel 10a, on Wednesday. However, the device has come under scrutiny for offering very minimal upgrades, with many users noting that it feels almost identical to its predecessor, the Pixel 9a. The smartphone was also reviewed by top tech YouTuber Marques Brownlee (MKBHD), who criticized the device in a recent video for being “old tech in new packaging.”
Pixel 10a: Old Hardware in a New Shell
Priced at ₹49,999, the Pixel 10a retains the same Tensor G4 chipset, along with 8 GB RAM and 128 GB storage, just like the Pixel 9a. This minimal enhancement makes the performance nearly indistinguishable from the previous generation.
Even the design has seen very little change. Apart from new color options, the body and layout closely resemble the Pixel 9a. Google did make minor improvements, such as slightly brighter display, thinner bezels, Gorilla Glass 7i protection, and an increase in charging speed to 30 watts, but these are considered incremental at best.
Software Features Take Center Stage
The Pixel 10a appears to emphasize software features over hardware upgrades. It includes functionalities like Best Take, Call Screening, and seven years of software updates. However, many of these features are gradually rolled out to older Pixel devices as well, reducing the novelty for current users.
Why Launch Pixel 10a?
According to MKBHD, the Pixel 10a launch seems more ceremonial than transformative. Google’s A-series has followed an annual release pattern, and the Pixel 10a continues this tradition, despite offering few new capabilities.
What Could Have Been Improved
Marques noted that while the A-series may not aim for Pro-level specifications, Google could have enhanced the Pixel 10a with a new chipset, MagSafe-style features, a glass back, reduced bezels, or improved cameras to make it more appealing to buyers.
Should You Buy It?
For existing Pixel 9a users, upgrading to the Pixel 10a offers little advantage beyond new color options. Potential buyers looking to experience the Pixel ecosystem may be better off either investing in a higher model or exploring alternatives within a similar budget.
The Pixel 10a launch highlights Google’s current focus on software-driven features rather than significant hardware innovation, leaving many consumers and tech reviewers wanting more.
