Geyser Safety Tips: How to Avoid Accidents Like the Recent Delhi Tragedy

A recent incident in Nizamuddin, Delhi, saw a geyser explosion claiming a life, highlighting the importance of identifying warning signs and maintaining geyser safety. Experts say that most geyser accidents are preventable if users recognize the early indicators and follow simple safety measures.

Warning Signs to Watch For
Before a geyser explosion occurs, there are usually three telltale signs:

  1. The geyser suddenly heats water excessively, indicating a faulty thermostat that may fail to auto-cut.
  2. Steam or bubbles appear in the tap water while filling, signaling overheating.
  3. Leaks from the tank or failure of the geyser to auto-cut even after prolonged use.

Noticing any of these signs early allows timely maintenance and prevents accidents.

Three Key Safety Measures

  1. Use a PRCD Plug – A Portable Residual Current Device (PRCD) cuts off electricity in case of current leakage, offering protection for high-voltage devices like geysers. It can be reset after resolving the issue.
  2. Install a Safety Valve – This device automatically releases water if temperatures rise too high, preventing explosions and significantly reducing the risk of a geyser blast.
  3. Seasonal Servicing – Just like ACs or coolers, geysers need regular seasonal maintenance. Internal cleaning and component inspection improve safety and ensure the geyser works efficiently.

Following these steps can protect you from accidents and keep your geyser operating safely throughout the year.
