Galgotia University found itself at the center of a controversy during the India AI Impact Summit in Delhi after a Chinese robotic dog was displayed at its booth. Social media clips went viral showing university representatives seemingly claiming the robot as their own, sparking widespread discussion and criticism.
University Issues Clarification
In response, Galgotia University clarified that it never claimed ownership of the robotic dog. The university stated that the robot, named “Orion”, was purchased from the Chinese firm Unitree and was intended solely as an educational tool for students to learn advanced technology.
The university emphasized that Orion is not just a machine but a mobile classroom for students to interact with and gain practical learning experience in robotics and AI.
Social Media Controversy
Despite the clarification, the controversy continues on social media. Clips showing university representatives presenting Orion and explaining its features led viewers to believe the robot was an in-house creation. X (formerly Twitter) also published community notes fact-checking the university’s claims.
About Unitree’s Go2 Robot
Unitree’s Go2 robot is a four-legged robotic dog, an advanced upgrade of the Go1 model. It comes equipped with 4D LiDAR sensors, allowing a 360-degree field of vision. This enables the robot to navigate obstacles, rough terrain, and stairs easily. Additionally, the Go2 is integrated with AI, making it a sophisticated platform for learning and experimentation.
The university’s clarification highlights that Orion is purely a learning and research tool for students, not a product developed by Galgotia University itself.
