Even with Two Mobiles in Every Hand, Landline Popularity Surges in Delhi

According to Delhi government data, the average resident in the capital owns two mobile phones. Yet, the number of landline connections in Delhi continues to rise year after year, highlighting an interesting trend in the city’s telecom landscape.

Delhi’s Telecom Numbers
Delhi now has over 60 million telephone connections. As of last year, mobile (wireless) connections totaled approximately 56.1 million, while landline (wired) connections reached 4.71 million. The consistent growth of landline connections indicates a demand for stable, fixed-line services at homes and offices.

From 2018 to 2025, total telephone connections in Delhi fluctuated slightly—from 57.4 million in 2018 to 60.8 million in 2025. While mobile subscriptions experienced minor ups and downs, landline connections steadily increased from 3.19 million in 2018 to over 4.71 million in 2025.

Why Landlines Are Still Popular
The data suggests that many Delhi residents view landlines as more reliable than mobile phones, particularly for fixed locations like homes or offices. Even though mobile connections dominate the market, the rising trend of landline subscriptions shows that people value stable and secure communication channels.

Mobile Trends vs. Landline Growth
Mobile connections have seen fluctuations: from 54.2 million in 2018, down to 52.2 million in 2022, and back up to 56.1 million in 2025. In contrast, landline connections have grown steadily, signaling a niche but important demand for fixed-line services.

Stable Market, Small but Notable Shift
Overall, Delhi’s telecom market has remained largely stable over the past eight years. However, the continuous growth in landline connections points to a subtle shift in consumer preference—a reliable, permanent connection remains valuable despite widespread mobile adoption.

Future Outlook
If this trend continues, landline subscriptions in Delhi could approach 10 million, reflecting a renewed interest in fixed-line telecom services even in a mobile-dominated era.
