“Don’t Keep Your Geyser On While Showering: Avoid Risk of Blast, Electric Shock, and Wiring Hazards

Keeping the geyser on while taking a shower might seem convenient, especially in winters, but it can be extremely dangerous. Experts warn that leaving the geyser on during showers increases the risk of blasts, electric shocks, faulty wiring, and other hazardous situations, putting users at serious risk.

Why It’s Risky
Modern geysers contain high-power heating rods that raise water temperature rapidly. Leaving the geyser on for extended periods while showering can increase pressure and heat inside the tank, sometimes resulting in explosions. Such accidents are particularly dangerous in bathrooms, where people are in close contact with water.

Electric Shock Hazard
Bathrooms are naturally wet environments. When a geyser is on during a shower, electricity and water come into direct contact, creating a severe risk of electric shock. Faulty wiring, poor earthing, or old geysers can worsen the situation, making it especially dangerous for wet bodies.

Thermostat and Wiring Damage
Extended usage while bathing can damage the geyser’s thermostat, increase internal pressure, and even cause short circuits. Continuous exposure to moisture and steam may also degrade wiring insulation, increasing the risk of fires or electrical faults.

Safety Tips

  • Turn on the geyser well before showering to heat the water, then switch it off while bathing.
  • Ensure proper ventilation in the bathroom; avoid using the shower in completely closed spaces.
  • Keep exhaust fans or windows open if the geyser runs for longer periods.
  • Ensure the geyser is properly earthed and protected with MCB/RCCB devices.
  • Avoid using old or leaking geysers.

By following these precautions, users can enjoy hot showers safely while preventing potential accidents, electrical hazards, and equipment damage.
