Computer Not Turning On? Try These Methods Before Visiting a Technician

New Delhi: Many users face situations where their computer won’t start despite pressing the power button. While it can be alarming, the issue is often simple and can be resolved at home before seeking professional help. Problems may arise from power supply issues, connected USB devices, or display settings. Here’s a step-by-step guide to troubleshoot your computer.

1. Check the Power Supply
The most common reason a PC or laptop won’t start is a power issue. If there’s no fan noise, lights are off, or the screen is blank, first try connecting your computer to a different power outlet. If it still doesn’t turn on, the power supply unit may be faulty and require replacement.

2. Inspect the Monitor
Sometimes the computer powers on but nothing appears on the screen. Check if the monitor is receiving power and ensure its switch is turned on. Verify that cables are securely connected and not damaged. Connecting to another monitor or a TV can help determine if the issue is with the display. For laptops, increasing the screen brightness may also reveal a seemingly blank display.

3. Listen for Beep Codes
Many computers emit a short beep when starting, indicating proper functioning. If there’s a problem, a series of beeps or codes may be heard. These signals help identify hardware issues. Refer to the user manual or download it from the manufacturer’s website to decode the beeps. Some systems display error codes on the motherboard if no beeps are heard.

4. Disconnect USB Devices
Before turning on your computer, remove all USB devices such as webcams, printers, external drives, and headsets. Only connect the keyboard and mouse initially. USB devices can sometimes prevent the computer from booting properly. Reconnect them after the system starts.

5. Boot in Safe Mode
If a blue screen appears, the problem may be due to software or driver issues. Search online for the error code and boot into Safe Mode to fix it. If the boot process stops three times consecutively, a repair screen may appear. Select advanced options to troubleshoot and resolve most software-related problems.

By following these steps, users can often identify and fix computer issues on their own, potentially saving time and service costs.
