Alibaba Group Holding’s research institute, DAMO Academy, has unveiled a new open-source embodied intelligence model named RynnBrain. Built on Alibaba’s Qwen3-VL, this model is specifically designed to empower robots to perceive physical environments, reason, and execute complex tasks independently.
With the rise of embodied intelligence models, Chinese tech giant Alibaba is pushing the boundaries of robotics AI. RynnBrain acts as a “brain” for robots, enabling them to move beyond pre-programmed routines and operate with cognitive autonomy. Unlike traditional AI systems that are primarily digital, RynnBrain is designed to understand, reason, and act in real-world physical environments.
What Sets RynnBrain Apart
According to Charlie Zheng, Chief Economist at Samoyed Cloud Technology Group Holdings, RynnBrain’s advanced reasoning capabilities distinguish it from other models in the market. This development marks a significant leap for Chinese developers in embodied intelligence, helping overcome major obstacles in robot development and commercialization. In simple terms, robots will no longer rely solely on programming—they will be able to think and act independently.
Beyond Observation: Real-World Reasoning
Reports from SCMP highlight that RynnBrain is not limited to observation alone. It excels in physically aware reasoning and completing complex real-world tasks. The system can identify potential actions in local or 3D contexts and map them spatially, enabling downstream vision-language-action (VLA) models to perform more sophisticated operations.
Top Performance in Benchmarks
RynnBrain was officially presented at DAMO Academy on Tuesday. Alibaba claims the model achieved top performance across critical embodied intelligence benchmarks, including embodied cognition, localization, and grounded visual understanding.
Previous Releases and Future Outlook
Last year, Alibaba established a robotics AI team at Qwen Laboratory, marking its entry into AI-driven hardware. Prior to RynnBrain, DAMO Academy released two other embodied models: RynnEC, a video multimodal large language model designed for embodied cognition tasks, and RynnVLA-001, a pre-trained video generation model for VLA tasks.
Charlie Zheng emphasized that Alibaba’s success in the competitive AI landscape will depend not only on model performance but also on the development of its ecosystem and the industrial adoption of its AI models.
RynnBrain represents a pivotal step toward robots with cognitive autonomy, bringing us closer to a future where machines can think and act like humans in physical environments.
