OpenAI’s AI chatbot ChatGPT is rolling out a global age prediction system to identify users under 18 years of age. The new feature aims to enhance safety for younger users by restricting access to certain content and features while allowing adult users full access.
How the Age Prediction System Works
The system estimates a user’s age based on account activity, usage patterns, and behavior over time. Factors such as how long the account has been active, typical usage times, and previous age information are all considered. OpenAI emphasizes that this method reduces the need to repeatedly ask users for their age, providing a safer experience automatically for those identified as minors.
Restrictions for Teen Users
For accounts predicted to belong to users under 18, ChatGPT will apply additional safeguards. These include limiting exposure to content involving graphic violence, self-harm, sexual or violent roleplay, risky viral challenges, and body-shaming material. The system has been developed with input from child development experts to ensure it protects younger users while allowing appropriate access to educational and safe interactions.
Age Verification Option for Adults
OpenAI acknowledges that automated systems can occasionally make mistakes. Users mistakenly flagged as under 18 can complete an age verification process using Persona’s selfie-based verification within ChatGPT’s account settings to regain full access.
Parental Controls Introduced
In addition to age prediction, OpenAI has introduced parental controls. These tools allow parents to set limits on how teens use ChatGPT, including silent hours, feature restrictions, and alerts for potential crises. Persona, already used on platforms like Roblox, facilitates secure verification of age and identity.
Global Rollout
OpenAI announced the rollout via X (formerly Twitter), stating:
“We’re rolling out age prediction on ChatGPT to help determine when an account likely belongs to someone under 18, so we can apply the right experience and safeguards for teens. Adults who are incorrectly placed in the teen experience can confirm their age in Settings > Account.”
The feature is being deployed globally, with the European Union set to adopt it in the near future.
