New Delhi: India has emerged as OpenAI’s second-largest market after the United States, with over 100 million weekly active users. A striking trend is the popularity of ChatGPT among young Indians: nearly 50% of queries come from users aged 18–24, and 80% of all queries are from users under 30.
Coding and Professional Guidance Lead Usage
Indian users are asking three times more coding-related questions than the global average. In addition, 35% of messages sent to ChatGPT are for professional guidance, compared to 30% worldwide. Other queries include general information (20%) and assistance with writing or content creation (20%**).
Codex: India’s Favorite Coding Assistant
OpenAI’s coding assistant, Codex, is particularly popular in India. The usage of Codex in India is three times higher than the global median. Its integration into a Mac app two weeks ago has further quadrupled weekly usage. Indians continue to send a significant number of coding-related queries, highlighting ChatGPT’s role as a learning and problem-solving tool.
A Tool for Everyday Life
ChatGPT has become more than just a digital assistant—it is now a friend, companion, and teacher for many. From learning new skills and solving coding problems to looking up recipes, ChatGPT is widely used across work, education, and daily life. OpenAI also offers a subscription tier in India for under $5, making the AI accessible to a broader audience.
Bottom line: With its massive young user base and strong utility for coding and professional guidance, ChatGPT is firmly establishing itself as a must-have AI tool in India.
