State-owned telecom company BSNL is set to discontinue its 3G mobile services across India, as part of its focus on expanding 4G networks and preparing for 5G rollout. Customers still using BSNL 3G SIM cards are advised to upgrade immediately to avoid service disruption.
Why BSNL is Shutting Down 3G
BSNL has decided to phase out its 3G services to prioritize 4G mobile networks and strengthen 5G preparations. The company is also planning to terminate contracts with Nokia and Chinese company ZTE, who currently manage network maintenance for 3G services.
Impact on Customers
According to reports, this move will affect customers who still rely on 3G SIMs, especially in areas where 4G coverage is limited. Currently, 3G services operate in approximately 5,863 towns and cities across India. Customers using 3G SIMs in these areas will face connectivity issues if they do not upgrade their SIM cards.
What 3G Customers Should Do
BSNL advises all 3G SIM users to visit the nearest BSNL service center or office to upgrade to a 4G or 5G SIM. The directive was communicated to all Circle Chief General Managers on 10 December, urging them to discontinue 3G services wherever possible. Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), which is installing BSNL 4G towers nationwide, is also involved in this transition.
BSNL Network Infrastructure
BSNL has installed 97,481 4G towers across the country. Out of a total of 229,278 tower sites, 58,919 are 3G sites. According to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, as of September 2025, BSNL had 92.2 million mobile subscribers, of which 22 million were 4G users. The remaining subscribers are still using 2G and 3G SIMs, with the majority being 2G users.
Technical Reason Behind the Shutdown
BSNL plans to fully utilize the 2100 MHz spectrum for 4G services. However, customers without 4G-compatible devices will also need to upgrade their phones, which may entail additional expenses.
Action Required: All BSNL 3G users should upgrade their SIMs promptly to ensure uninterrupted service and avoid any connectivity issues.
