Cybercriminals are luring people with promises of heavy discounts on FASTag recharges and annual passes, duping unsuspecting users into fraudulent schemes. Scammers are exploiting search engine optimization (SEO) techniques to make fake websites, featuring NHAI’s name and logo, appear at the top of Google search results. Users who click on these websites often fall victim to financial fraud.
How the Scam Works
FASTag is widely used in India to pay tolls on highways, and frequent travelers often purchase FASTag Annual Passes. Recently, a scam has emerged in which fraudsters advertise large discounts on FASTag recharges and annual passes. These scammers create counterfeit websites that closely resemble the official NHAI portal, using the authority’s name, logo, and even URLs that look legitimate.
According to CyberDost I4C, a recent incident in Chandigarh involved a 65-year-old citizen who was tricked in this manner. The fake websites are promoted on social media and through online advertisements, making them appear authentic.
Personal and Financial Data at Risk
Once users click on the fraudulent links, they are prompted to enter vehicle numbers, FASTag numbers, and mobile numbers. Distracted by the promise of discounts, many users proceed with payments, only to find that their passes are never delivered. Meanwhile, their banking details are compromised, often routed through mule accounts controlled by scammers.
How to Stay Safe
CyberDost I4C advises the following precautions to avoid falling victim to such scams:
- Always purchase FASTag annual passes through the Rajmargyatra mobile app or the official NHAI website.
- Do not trust advertisements on social media promising FASTag discounts.
- Perform FASTag recharges only through official channels.
- Remember that the top result in a Google search is not always the legitimate website.
By following these steps, users can safeguard themselves against scams while availing legitimate FASTag services.
