ATM Deducted Money but No Cash Dispensed? Here’s How to Claim a Refund — and Compensation

Customers who face failed ATM withdrawals — where money is debited but cash is not dispensed — need not panic. Banking rules ensure that such amounts must be automatically refunded within a fixed timeline. If the bank delays the refund, customers are entitled to financial compensation.

According to Reserve Bank of India (RBI) guidelines, banks must reverse failed ATM transactions within five working days. If the deadline is missed, the customer is eligible for a penalty of ₹100 per day until the amount is credited back.

A Common but Fixable Problem

ATM malfunction during withdrawal is a frequent complaint. In such cases, the account gets debited even though the machine fails to deliver cash. While most refunds happen automatically, customers should take immediate steps to document the incident in case escalation becomes necessary.

Steps to File a Complaint

Customers are advised to follow these steps:

  • Save the SMS or transaction alert confirming the deduction
  • Note the ATM location, date, and exact time of the failed attempt
  • Report the issue to the bank within 24–48 hours via mobile app, net banking, or customer care
  • Wait for the mandatory 5 working day refund window

If the money is not credited within this period, customers can escalate the complaint through the RBI’s Complaint Management System (CMS).

How to Escalate to RBI

If the bank fails to act within the prescribed time, customers can lodge a complaint through the RBI CMS portal. Under RBI rules, compensation of ₹100 per day becomes payable from the sixth working day until the refund is completed.

This rule is designed to protect consumers and ensure accountability in digital banking transactions.

Consumer Protection Framework

Financial experts say customers often remain unaware of their rights in such cases. The RBI’s framework ensures that banks cannot indefinitely delay refunds and must compensate customers for inconvenience.

Maintaining transaction records and reporting promptly can significantly speed up the resolution process.
