Apple Releases New Update for 13-Year-Old iPhone 5s; FaceTime and iMessage Will Continue Working

The iPhone 5s, first launched in September 2013, has now received a new update alongside the latest iOS 26.2.1 for newer models. The update, iOS 12.5.8, is specifically designed for devices still running iOS 12, including the iPhone 5s and iPhone 6. With this update, users can continue to use their devices for another year without losing access to essential services.

Why This Update Matters
The update renews critical system certificates required for iMessage, FaceTime, and even basic device activation. Without these certificates, these services would stop functioning once the old certificates expired. Apple has confirmed that these functions will continue to work beyond January 2027, providing significant support for users who rely on these devices as secondary phones, backup handsets, or for elderly family members.

The last update for the iPhone 5s and iPhone 6 was released in January 2023.
