Apple Prepares to Challenge Chinese Competitors with 200MP Camera iPhone

Apple is reportedly planning a major camera upgrade for its upcoming iPhone series. According to a report by investment bank Morgan Stanley, Apple is working on equipping the iPhone 20 series, expected in 2028, with a 200-megapixel (MP) camera. The camera module is said to be supplied by Samsung. Currently, Apple’s iPhones feature 48MP rear cameras. This new 200MP sensor is expected to deliver DSLR-like image quality, marking a significant leap in smartphone photography.

iPhone Camera Evolution

Apple has a history of gradually enhancing its iPhone cameras. Over the years, the main camera sensor increased from 12MP to 48MP, which is now used across the main, ultra-wide, and telephoto lenses. According to the report, Apple’s upcoming models in 2026 (iPhone 18 series) and 2027 (iPhone 19 series) will continue to feature 48MP sensors, while the 200MP upgrade will debut with the 2028 iPhone 20 series.

Testing and Anticipation

Previously, in 2025, well-known Weibo tipster Digital Chat Station revealed that Apple had begun testing 200MP cameras for future iPhones. At the time, the exact release timeline was unclear. Morgan Stanley’s report now provides a clearer expectation for users eagerly awaiting the next big leap in iPhone photography.

Impact for iPhone Enthusiasts

The introduction of a 200MP camera could revolutionize smartphone photography, producing images comparable to high-end DSLRs. This upgrade is likely to excite photography enthusiasts and iPhone loyalists, building anticipation for Apple’s premium 2028 iPhone series. Currently, iPhone photography with 48MP sensors is already widely praised, and the jump to 200MP is expected to further enhance image clarity, detail, and creative possibilities.

While Apple and Samsung have not officially confirmed the details, this planned upgrade demonstrates Apple’s commitment to competing with Chinese smartphone makers in the high-end camera segment.
