Anthropic Faces Legal Trouble in India Over Company Name

February 10, 2026: Global AI firm Anthropic has hit a legal snag in India shortly after entering the market. A Karnataka-based company has filed a lawsuit claiming that it has been using the name “Anthropic” since 2017 and is now demanding ₹1 crore in damages.

Background of the Dispute
Anthropic, known for its advanced AI technologies, recently announced plans to strengthen its presence in India, including opening a local office and appointing Irina Ghosh, former MD of Microsoft India, as its India head. However, the Karnataka company, owned by Mohammed Ayyaz Mulla, has raised concerns that the entry of the US-based Anthropic could confuse its existing clients.

The Indian company has requested the commercial court to allow it continued use of the name and to grant damages for alleged infringement.

Anthropic’s Activities in India
The dispute emerges as Anthropic ramps up its operations in India. Its CEO, Dario Amodei, is scheduled to participate in the upcoming AI Impact Summit, highlighting the company’s commitment to the Indian AI market. Analysts note that India’s rapidly growing internet market has become a key battleground for global AI companies, including Anthropic and OpenAI.

Next Steps
In a hearing on January 20, the court issued a summons to the US company but did not impose any interim restrictions. The next hearing is scheduled for February 16. The Indian company has emphasized that it seeks clarity rather than confrontation, but is prepared for legal proceedings if necessary. Observers are watching to see whether Anthropic will change its name in India or reach a settlement with the local firm.
