‘AI Can Do Many Things, But It Can’t Fix Delhi Traffic,’ Says Former UK PM Rishi Sunak at India AI Impact Summit 2026

New Delhi: At the India AI Impact Summit 2026, former UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak playfully remarked on Delhi’s traffic, opening his speech with, “AI can do many things, but it cannot fix Delhi’s traffic.” While lighthearted, his comment underscored the larger point: AI has enormous potential to bring transformative change in society, even if it cannot solve every local problem.

Sunak praised India’s readiness to become a global AI leader, citing its talent pool and robust digital infrastructure. He noted that while Western countries approach AI with caution and concern, India demonstrates enthusiasm and confidence in its AI ecosystem. He highlighted that India ranked third in the Stanford Global AI Vibrancy Report, reflecting a highly active AI environment.

Leadership in AI Is About Application, Not Just Invention

Sunak emphasized that leadership in AI does not come solely from inventing new technologies, but from applying them effectively. Drawing on examples from Technology and Great Powers, he illustrated that many nations have historically gained the most by optimally using existing technologies, rather than inventing them.

AI Must Deliver Tangible Benefits

He stressed that trust in AI is built when people experience real benefits, such as improved healthcare and efficient public services. According to Sunak, successful AI deployment is not just about innovation but impacting everyday lives positively.

AI and the Future of Jobs

Addressing concerns about AI’s impact on employment, Sunak noted that while AI will change the job market and render some roles obsolete, it will also create new opportunities. Governments must focus not on restricting AI but on preparing the workforce for emerging roles. Highlighting the importance of future generations, he said, “We must empower the next generation to thrive in an AI-driven world,” referencing his own daughters as inspiration.
