After Humans, Robots to Venture into Space: Chinese Company Prepares Humanoid Astronaut

China, which has already sent humans into space, is now taking a step further. Two Chinese companies have joined forces to send a humanoid robot into space. The robot, named PM01, is currently under development. A version of PM01 was launched in the market last year.

The companies involved are Engine AI, which specializes in humanoid robots, and Beijing Interstellar Human Spaceflight Technology, a commercial space company. Together, they are working on the Humanoid Robot Astronaut Exploration Program, aiming to create the world’s first robot astronaut.

PM01 is equipped with multiple sensors and has autonomous decision-making capabilities. It is designed to perform a variety of tasks independently, making it suitable for the harsh conditions of space.

The PM01 “JD Joy Inside” version was launched in June last year. According to reports, it is lightweight, agile, and open-source. Priced at $27,000, it features the Joy Inside AI system, allowing seamless communication with humans, adaptability in its role, and even the ability to develop its own personality and change its voice.

Challenges of Using Robots in Space
Engine AI has stated that using robots in space is no easy task. PM01 must maintain stability, make autonomous decisions, and adapt to conditions without Earth-like gravity. Space presents additional challenges such as extreme temperature fluctuations and high radiation, which the robot must endure.

Preparing the Robot for Space
The companies plan to enhance PM01’s capabilities and robustness to make it space-ready. The goal is to create a humanoid robot capable of performing tasks independently, without human assistance.

Potential Applications
Once successful, PM01 could be deployed for various tasks in space, including external maintenance of space stations, exploring hazardous paths, and long-duration monitoring missions. If these missions succeed, the risk to human astronauts could be significantly reduced.
