With summer approaching, it’s time to get your air conditioner serviced. But the question arises: should you go for a jet (water pump) service or a normal/dry service? The choice depends on your AC usage and whether it’s the first service of the season.
Jet Service vs Normal Service
Jet Service: This involves cleaning the AC using a high-pressure water pump. Water is sprayed through a pressure gun to thoroughly clean cooling coils, fins, and the blower. It removes deep-seated dirt and grime accumulated over months.
Normal or Dry Service: In this method, the technician removes the air filter for washing, brushes the cooling coils, and dusts the blower. Only a small amount of water or a spray bottle is used. Dry service is less expensive but cannot reach the deep grime inside the coils.
When to Opt for Jet Service
Jet service is recommended at the start of the summer season, especially if your AC has been unused for months. It is also ideal for ACs that run long hours daily. A thorough jet cleaning ensures coils and condensers are fully opened, improving cooling efficiency, reducing compressor load, and lowering electricity bills.
If your AC runs 15–18 hours a day, it’s advisable to get a jet service every two months for optimal performance.
When Normal Service Is Enough
If you had a jet service at the end of the previous season, or if your AC is used moderately (5–7 hours a day), a normal or dry service is sufficient. You can also maintain your AC between seasons with regular dry service, saving both time and cost.
Pros and Cons of Jet Service
Pros:
- High-pressure water removes years of accumulated dirt.
- Restores AC cooling performance close to new.
- Reduces compressor load and electricity consumption.
- Eliminates odors and bacterial buildup.
Cons:
- More expensive than normal service.
- If handled carelessly, high-pressure water may damage delicate aluminum fins.
- Surrounding area may get wet and messy.
Pros and Cons of Normal Service
Pros:
- Economical and safer for internal AC components.
- Minimal risk of water damaging PCB or sensors.
Cons:
- Only cleans superficial dust; cannot remove deep-seated dirt inside coils.
- Limited impact on cooling efficiency compared to jet service.
Conclusion
For first service of the season or heavy-use ACs, jet service is the best choice. For regular maintenance or low-use ACs, normal/dry service is sufficient. Choosing the right service ensures longer AC life, better cooling, and lower electricity bills.
