Parents often wonder if they can update their child’s Aadhaar card using the new UIDAI app. The answer is yes and no. While details like name and address can be updated through the app, biometric data such as fingerprints and iris scans require a visit to an Aadhaar center.
Mandatory Biometric Update (MBU) for Children
The government has made it mandatory to update Aadhaar for children aged 5 and above. This is known as Mandatory Biometric Update (MBU). Children under five do not have their biometric data collected at the time of Aadhaar enrollment; their Aadhaar is linked to their parents’ Aadhaar. After the age of five, updating biometrics becomes necessary.
What the New Aadhaar App Can Do
The recently launched UIDAI Aadhaar app allows users to update information such as mobile number, address, and other personal details. However, it does not support biometric updates, which can only be completed in person at an Aadhaar enrollment center.
Why Biometrics Must Be Updated at the Center
Updating biometrics requires specialized devices like fingerprint scanners and iris scanners, which are only available at official Aadhaar centers. This ensures accuracy and security of the biometric data. On the other hand, name and address changes can be submitted online by providing the necessary documents.
How the Aadhaar App Helps
Although you cannot update your child’s biometrics online, the Aadhaar app provides guidance:
- Use the Help section for FAQs and assistance.
- The Contact Us option helps locate the nearest Aadhaar center.
- Biometric updates for children can also be done at schools and select post offices where MBU services are available.
Parents are advised to plan MBU updates early to ensure compliance and keep their child’s Aadhaar details accurate and up-to-date.
