With summer arriving early this year, people will soon start using their air conditioners. Before switching on your AC for the first time this season, there are five essential checks to prevent costly damage and ensure smooth operation.
1. Get a Hard or At Least Soft Service Done
Before the summer season, it is important to service your AC. If a full hard service is not immediately possible, a soft service can suffice. Hard service is done by technicians with proper tools, while soft service involves cleaning filters, coils using a toothbrush and water, and flushing the split AC’s outdoor unit with water if possible.
2. Inspect the Condenser and Outdoor Unit
For split ACs, the condenser (the grill at the back of the outdoor unit) can get clogged with dust and dirt when unused. Clean it thoroughly with a strong stream of water. Ensure there is at least 2–3 feet of clearance around the outdoor unit. After switching on the AC, check for unusual noises from the fan or compressor.
3. Check the Drain Pipe and Possible Leaks
ACs that remain off for long periods may accumulate dirt in the drain pipe, causing leakage. Inspect the drain and any potential leaks before using the AC.
4. Verify Stabilizer and Electrical Connections
Make sure the stabilizer is functioning properly. Inspect the AC plug and wiring for loose or damaged connections. Tightening wires connected to the stabilizer reduces the risk of electrical issues.
5. Start on Fan Mode First
When turning on the AC for the first time, set it to fan mode. This helps remove any dust inside the unit and allows you to detect problems without engaging the compressor, preventing potential damage to critical components.
By following these five steps, you can ensure your AC runs efficiently and safely throughout the summer, avoiding expensive repairs and unexpected breakdowns.
