New Delhi: If your washing machine is one of the main reasons behind your rising electricity bill, a few simple habits can significantly reduce power consumption. Leading home-appliance brand LG has shared several practical tips that can help households save energy without compromising on wash quality.
Avoid Overloading the Machine
According to LG, stuffing too many clothes into the machine forces the motor to work harder, leading to higher electricity consumption and faster wear and tear.
When the drum is overloaded, clothes cannot rotate freely, preventing water and detergent from reaching every fabric layer. This results in poor cleaning, and users often end up washing the clothes again—doubling the power usage.
Always follow the machine’s load capacity to ensure efficient washing and lower energy use.
Wash Clothes in Cold Water
Heating water consumes the maximum electricity during a wash cycle. Switching from hot to cold water can reduce power usage by up to 70–80%.
Modern detergents are designed to work effectively in cold water, and most clothes do not require hot water except heavily soiled garments.
Using cold water is one of the easiest ways to bring down your electricity bill.
Run the Machine Only When Fully Loaded
Running the washing machine for a small batch of clothes is one of the biggest energy mistakes.
A machine consumes almost the same amount of electricity whether it washes a few clothes or a full load.
A better practice is to wash clothes two or three times a week with a full load, instead of running small loads daily.
However, ensure the load does not exceed the machine’s capacity.
Use the Eco or Energy-Saving Mode
Modern washing machines—including LG’s latest models with Eco Hybrid technology—come with Eco or Energy Saving modes.
Once selected, the machine automatically optimizes water usage, temperature and wash duration.
This ensures effective cleaning while significantly cutting electricity consumption.
Older machines often have a “Quick Wash” or “Eco” program—users should prefer these modes for regular laundry.
Keep the Machine Clean and Well-Maintained
A clean and well-maintained washing machine always consumes less power.
LG recommends cleaning the filter every 10–15 wash cycles to prevent blockages that force the motor to work harder.
Ensure the machine is placed on a level surface, and regularly clean the rubber door seal.
Running an empty cycle with hot water and vinegar once a year also helps maintain internal hygiene and improves efficiency.
With proper usage and routine maintenance, even older washing machines can help you save substantial energy. Following these tips not only prolongs the machine’s life but also brings noticeable reduction in monthly electricity bills.
