Special QR Codes and Toll-Free Numbers to Appear at Pharmacies Across India

New Delhi: Soon, every retail and wholesale pharmacy in India will display a special QR code and toll-free number—not for ordering medicines, but to report adverse effects or side effects caused by drugs.

This initiative, aimed at smartphone users, allows anyone to quickly report issues like rashes, dizziness, swelling, nausea, or other serious drug reactions. The Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) has instructed all state and union territory drug licensing authorities to implement the system across all pharmacies.

How It Works

Customers and healthcare professionals can scan the QR code or call 1800-180-3024, connecting directly to India’s Pharmacovigilance Program’s Adverse Drug Reaction Monitoring System (PvPI ADRMS). This will allow for instant reporting of adverse drug reactions (ADRs), helping authorities monitor drug safety more effectively.

The decision was made during the 16th Working Group Meeting of the Pharmacovigilance Program of India in June 2025, highlighting the need for accessible reporting channels for drug-related side effects.

Placement and Visibility

According to CDSCO’s circular, the QR code and toll-free number must be prominently displayed at every pharmacy counter, ensuring that all customers can easily see and use it. Licensing authorities are urged to implement the instructions immediately and promote awareness among all license holders to enhance drug safety and public health.

Benefits for Patients and Pharma Companies

Previously, many adverse drug effects went unreported due to lack of awareness or cumbersome reporting methods. With this system, anyone with a smartphone can instantly report side effects, helping regulators and pharmaceutical companies track drug safety, take corrective actions, and improve medication standards.

Experts say this step is a major milestone in India’s drug safety efforts, benefiting both patients and medicine manufacturers. It will ensure that potential drug risks are identified early, improving overall healthcare safety in the country.
