Indore, MP: Indore has once again emerged as India’s cleanest city, securing this top spot for the eighth time in the Swachh Survekshan 2024 rankings. Known widely as the “Clean City of India,” Indore has consistently set benchmarks in urban cleanliness and waste management since 2017, making it a model city for others to follow.
Why Indore Stands Out
Indore’s success is not just a result of municipal initiatives but also active citizen participation. The city has implemented effective waste reduction policies, mandatory segregation of garbage, and fostered a culture of cleanliness among its residents. These measures have ensured that Indore remains consistently at the top in national and international evaluations.
Citizen Awareness and Community Participation
The city has emphasized public awareness campaigns, ensuring that cleanliness is a shared responsibility. Residents actively participate in post-event clean-ups, and large festivals in Indore are conducted with zero-waste initiatives, including international cricket matches. Even newlywed couples are encouraged to take cleanliness pledges as part of community efforts.
Children as Cleanliness Ambassadors
Indore’s children play a pivotal role in maintaining city hygiene. Schools and colleges have formed small groups and committees responsible for keeping their surroundings clean. Teachers and parents educate children on the importance of hygiene, effectively turning them into cleanliness ambassadors in their neighborhoods.
Air Quality Monitoring and Sustainability
In addition to waste management, Indore has taken steps to monitor air quality through modern stations inaugurated in collaboration with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) under the Clear Air Catalyst project. These initiatives complement ongoing efforts to make cleanliness and energy efficiency a part of daily life.
Indore’s achievement reflects a combination of governmental initiatives, citizen engagement, and innovative urban management, setting an exemplary standard for cities across India.
