Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, recently shared an intriguing insight into how he uses ChatGPT to assist in raising his newborn child. Appearing on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Altman revealed that he often turns to the AI chatbot for guidance on numerous parenting questions, saying he cannot imagine raising a newborn without its help.
How ChatGPT Supports Parenting
During the show, Altman explained that he frequently asks ChatGPT simple but significant questions, such as why his child laughs when food falls on the floor. While the AI was designed to solve complex problems, its responses provide him with reassurance and practical guidance in day-to-day parenting.
Altman shared a real-life example: at a party, other parents mentioned that their six-month-old was crawling everywhere, which made him wonder why his own son had not started crawling yet. He immediately asked ChatGPT, “Should I take my child to the doctor tomorrow? Is this normal?” The AI responded thoughtfully, reassuring him that his child’s development was perfectly normal. Altman emphasized that ChatGPT provides personalized guidance, helping parents understand when to worry and when to stay calm.
AI as a Parenting Companion
Altman noted that he uses ChatGPT to monitor developmental milestones, assess concerns, and ensure he does not place unnecessary pressure on his child. The AI helps him navigate uncertainties, offering clarity and peace of mind in parenting decisions.
Despite his reliance on AI, Altman has been clear: his son will never be smarter than AI, and children growing up today will experience a world deeply integrated with artificial intelligence.
Perspective on Technology and Parenting
Altman’s experience underscores a changing perspective on technology. Since becoming a parent, he views AI not just as a tool for work, but also as a support system for personal life, blending professional technology with everyday family needs.
Recently, Altman even issued a “Code Red” at OpenAI, urging employees to focus on ChatGPT’s development, as companies like Google rapidly advance in AI technologies. This highlights the increasing centrality of AI not only in industry but in modern parenting as well.
