New Delhi: In a major move aimed at strengthening mobile security and combating cybercrime, the Indian government has issued an order mandating all smartphone manufacturers to pre-install the government’s cyber security app, Sanchar Sathi, on new devices. Users will not be able to uninstall the app.
Purpose of the Order
The decision seeks to tackle rising cases of mobile theft, fake IMEI numbers, fraud calls, and cybercrime. Sanchar Sathi helps users track stolen phones, verify IMEI numbers, report suspicious calls, and block fraudulent mobile connections. The government claims that pre-loading the app will enhance national mobile security and make it difficult for criminals to sell stolen devices.
Implementation Timeline
The order, issued on 28 November 2025, applies to all smartphones manufactured or sold in India. Companies have been given a 90-day window to comply. Reports suggest that some smartphone manufacturers, including Apple, are concerned because their policy does not allow pre-installed apps on new devices without user consent.
Achievements of Sanchar Sathi
Since its launch in January 2025, the app has already been downloaded over 5 million times. Government data shows that it has helped block more than 3.7 million stolen or lost phones and recover 50,000 smartphones in October alone. Additionally, the app has assisted in closing over 30 million fake mobile connections, making it a powerful tool for cyber security.
Impact on Users
While smartphone companies are adjusting to the new mandate, users are unlikely to face major inconvenience. Many already use pre-installed apps, and the Sanchar Sathi app provides valuable protection against cyber threats, including stolen phones and fraudulent numbers. Users can directly leverage the app to enhance security and safeguard their devices.
This initiative reflects the government’s proactive approach to cyber safety and its commitment to protect mobile users across the country.
