Elon Musk’s Starlink is gearing up to launch its satellite internet service in India, targeting both retail and enterprise customers. According to recent reports, the service for retail users could cost between ₹2,500 and ₹3,500 per month. Earlier, a pricing plan of ₹8,600 per month briefly appeared on the company’s website, but it was quickly removed, with Starlink attributing it to a technical glitch.
Starlink’s India Plans
The satellite internet provider is preparing to serve industries including maritime, aviation, retail, and enterprise sectors, while also offering services to individual consumers. Experts note that the previously leaked ₹8,600 plan was considered too expensive for the Indian market, suggesting that the company will announce more suitable pricing after obtaining all regulatory approvals and necessary spectrum from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).
Licenses and Approvals
Starlink has already secured the Global Mobile Personal Communication by Satellite (GMPCS) license, along with a VSAT license for providing connectivity in aviation and maritime sectors. However, the company is still awaiting final government clearance and approval from security agencies before it can commercially launch its services in India.
Focus on Long-Term Market Presence
Industry analysts suggest that Starlink’s current entry strategy is not focused on immediate profits. Instead, the company aims to establish its presence and infrastructure in India. As the satellite network expands and operational costs decrease, more competitive pricing is expected in the long term.
Why Satellite Internet Matters in India
Satellite internet is particularly beneficial in areas where traditional internet services are slow, unreliable, or unavailable. Remote regions, difficult terrains, and locations where laying cable is expensive or impractical can greatly benefit from Starlink’s high-speed connectivity. The service aims to bridge the digital divide, bringing fast and reliable internet to underserved areas across India.
With its advanced satellite network, Starlink could transform internet access in India, enabling faster communication, better connectivity for businesses, and improved access for rural communities.
