Child Receives Electric Shock from Mobile Charger: Essential Safety Tips for Parents

A recent incident has highlighted the hidden dangers of keeping mobile chargers near children while sleeping. Lorenzo Lopez, an 8-year-old from the United States, suffered severe burns after receiving an electric shock from a loosely plugged charger in an extension cord.

According to reports, Lorenzo was wearing a gold chain, a part of which got stuck in the gap between the charger and the extension cord. This caused a sudden electric current to pass through his body. Lorenzo experienced an immediate jolt and intense heat in his chest and neck. Terrified, he pulled the chain away, which ultimately saved his life. Medical professionals later confirmed that without this quick reaction, the outcome could have been fatal.

Lorenzo was rushed to the hospital with deep burns on his chest and neck. Doctors performed a skin graft to repair the damaged tissue. After days of treatment, Lorenzo is now recovering, but his mother has shared the incident widely to warn other parents.

Why keeping chargers near the bed is risky
Many people charge their phones on beds or under pillows at night. If the charger gets loose, metal objects like chains, jewelry, or even pens can come into contact with exposed pins, leading to electric shocks.

Important safety tips

  1. Avoid cheap or damaged chargers: Always use certified chargers from reputable brands. Discard frayed wires or loose plugs immediately. Ensure extension boards fit plugs securely.
  2. Remove metal accessories while sleeping: Chains, bracelets, or any metal objects can conduct electricity and pose serious risks. Children should sleep without jewelry.
  3. Keep chargers out of reach of children: Small children may pull or chew on cords, increasing the risk of electric shock. Place chargers on high tables or unplug them before sleeping.
  4. Unplug fully charged devices: Leaving chargers plugged in overnight not only increases the risk of shocks but may also cause fire hazards.

A small precaution can prevent a potentially life-threatening accident. Parents are urged to keep chargers and mobile devices away from children and follow these simple safety measures.
