Beware of Fake DigiLocker Apps: MeitY Warns Users Against Downloading, Risks Theft of Important Documents

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has issued a stern warning against fake DigiLocker apps circulating on app stores, cautioning users that downloading them could put their sensitive personal documents at risk.

DigiLocker, a government-backed digital storage platform, allows citizens to safely store essential documents such as Aadhaar, PAN, driving licenses, educational certificates, insurance papers, and other official records. It functions as a secure online locker accessible via smartphones, eliminating the need to carry physical documents.

Fake Apps Pose Serious Threats
In recent times, several counterfeit DigiLocker apps have appeared on Google Play Store and Apple App Store. These fake apps are designed to mimic the official app but are intended to steal personal information and misuse users’ data. Such fraudulent apps pose a significant risk to citizens’ privacy in today’s increasingly digital world.

How to Protect Yourself
MeitY advises users to exercise extreme caution while downloading apps:

  1. Verify the Developer: Only download the official DigiLocker app created by the government’s Digital Department. Any unfamiliar developer should raise suspicion.
  2. Check the App Logo and Design: Fake apps often feature minor errors, unusual wording, or poorly designed icons.
  3. Confirm Official Links: Genuine apps link directly to the official government website. Avoid apps with suspicious or unfamiliar links.
  4. Read Ratings and Reviews: Authentic apps usually have consistent feedback and ratings, whereas fake apps may have poor or very few reviews.
  5. Avoid Unknown Links: Never install DigiLocker from forwarded messages or unofficial websites.

If a user suspects that they have installed a counterfeit app, MeitY recommends immediate deletion of the app and updating all passwords to prevent potential misuse.

As the popularity of digital storage grows, vigilance is crucial to ensure that personal and official documents remain safe from cyber threats.
