Apple Refuses to Pre-Install ‘Sanchar Saathi’ App on iPhones: Government’s Security Move Faces Roadblock

The Indian government recently directed all mobile phone manufacturers to pre-install the Sanchar Saathi app on all new smartphones. However, Apple has officially refused to comply with the order and is expected to communicate its objections to the government in writing soon.

The Sanchar Saathi app was developed to help track and block stolen phones and prevent their misuse in criminal activities. The government believes that mandatory installation of this app could significantly reduce phone theft and cyber fraud incidents.

Government Orders
The directive required companies like Apple, Samsung, and Xiaomi to pre-install the app on all new devices within 90 days. Additionally, older phones were expected to receive the app through software updates. Initially, the order also implied that users would not be able to uninstall or disable the app.

Why Apple Refused
According to Reuters, Apple stated that it does not comply with such directives in any country. The company expressed concerns that forcing the app onto iPhones could compromise the privacy and security of its devices. Apple’s iOS ecosystem is highly secure and closed, preventing any third-party app from deep integration. The company fears that mandatory installation of a government app could potentially expose devices to hackers, putting user data at risk. This is a key reason why Apple’s security is globally trusted.

Privacy Concerns of the App
The app’s privacy policy requires access to sensitive data. While Android devices request access to call logs, messages, and calls, the iPhone version would also require permissions for the camera, photos, and files. Apple is concerned that such access could be misused for surveillance, further strengthening its refusal.

Optional Usage Now
Following the controversy, Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia clarified that the app is entirely optional. Users can choose to install it or delete it at any time. This is a shift from the initial directive, which did not mention the option to uninstall the app.
