Several schools across the United States are now installing AI-powered surveillance devices that can recognize students’ faces and monitor sounds, even in restrooms, sparking major privacy concerns.
How AI Devices Are Being Used
According to Forbes, Beverly Hills High School in California has implemented an advanced AI system where cameras match faces with databases, detect potential violence from video feeds, and monitor unusual sounds in restrooms, such as calls for help. Smoke and vaping detection devices are also installed, while drones patrol school grounds and parking lots scan license plates.
Superintendent Alex Chernis explained that these measures are necessary due to increasing security threats in large urban schools. The district has invested millions in these technologies this year alone, claiming they help identify potential dangers early.
Limitations and Errors
Despite their sophistication, AI devices are not foolproof. They have occasionally misidentified harmless objects as threats. For example, laptops or water bottles were flagged as weapons, causing false alarms. One incident involved a child opening a packet of chips, which was misinterpreted as brandishing a gun, prompting police intervention. Companies like Evolv and ZeroEyes have faced scrutiny for such errors.
Privacy Concerns
Privacy advocates, including the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), warn that constant surveillance can erode trust among students. Children may feel they are always being watched, discouraging them from sharing personal or emotional issues with teachers. Educators have also expressed concern over having cameras in sensitive areas such as libraries.
Benefits Cited by Schools
Despite concerns, schools report some advantages:
- Faster response when students go missing
- Detection of smoke, vaping, or other hazards in restrooms
- Improved overall safety, making students feel more secure
A student noted that the threat of bomb hoaxes felt less alarming with AI monitoring in place.
Why AI Surveillance Became Necessary
Rising incidents of school shootings have prompted schools to adopt these measures. According to Everytown for Gun Safety, several children have died in shootings at U.S. schools this year alone. AI systems are intended to detect threats early and save lives, though debates continue over whether the privacy trade-offs are justified.
