Yogi Adityanath Strikes Back at Avimukteshwaranand Over ‘Aurangzeb’ Remark, Warns Against Those Weakening Sanatan Dharma

Sonipat/UP: The controversy involving Shankaracharya Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati and the Uttar Pradesh government has taken a new turn. The dispute began during Mouni Amavasya over ritual bathing, and the Shankaracharya continues his protest at the Magh Mela in Prayagraj.

Recently, Avimukteshwaranand reportedly criticized UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, likening him to Aurangzeb and questioning his stance on Sanatan Dharma. In response, without naming anyone directly, CM Yogi warned that several “Kalnemi” figures disguised as saints are attempting to weaken Sanatan Dharma.

Yogi’s Statement
Speaking in Sonipat, CM Yogi said: “For a true saint, dharma comes above all. A monk’s property is not personal; dharma is his property, and the nation is his pride. Those who act against dharma cannot represent the Sanatan tradition. Dharma is demonstrated through conduct, not merely attire or words.”

Yogi referred to the term “Kalnemi,” a mythical demon in the Ramayana who tried to mislead Hanuman while he was fetching the Sanjeevani herb. Drawing a parallel, he suggested that those undermining Sanatan Dharma in the guise of religious authority are acting similarly.

Background of the Controversy
The dispute traces back to Mouni Amavasya in Prayagraj, when Avimukteshwaranand attempted to take a royal-style ceremonial bath. The administration reportedly restricted his procession, advising him to follow the same guidelines as other akharas. Following this, the Shankaracharya staged a sit-in protest. Authorities subsequently issued a notice, citing the Supreme Court, and refused to officially recognize him as Shankaracharya.

The controversy has drawn political attention, with the Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh calling the incident an insult to Sanatan Dharma. The issue continues to unfold amid protests and public debate at the Magh Mela.
