Haridwar, Uttarakhand: In a significant move ahead of the Haridwar Ardh Kumbh 2027, the Juna Akhara has expelled Mahamandaleshwar Swami Yatindranand Giri and Mahamandaleshwar Swami Prabodhanand Giri for raising questions over the event and making statements against the government. The action was announced through a letter issued by Mahant Mohan Bharti, the International President of Shri Panch Dashnam Juna Akhara.
The Akhara stated that the action was taken due to the monks’ unwarranted criticism of the state government and administration, including questioning the Akhara representatives’ meeting with Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami regarding the Ardh Kumbh arrangements.
Akhara Stands for Tradition and Discipline
Mahant Mohan Bharti emphasized that the Akhara system is rooted in high ideals of tradition, discipline, and social conduct, and anyone acting contrary to these values will not be protected or allowed to retain influence. The roles of other monks involved are also under investigation, and action may be taken if evidence is found.
The letter highlighted that both monks used inappropriate and disrespectful language and made statements detrimental to the Sanatan Dharma, aiming to disturb the upcoming Kumbh Mela. Swami Prabodhanand Giri has previously faced multiple complaints, including an ongoing murder case investigation, while Swami Yatindranand Giri had contested the 2009 Lok Sabha elections on a BJP ticket.
Ardh Kumbh 2027 Preparations
The Ardh Kumbh Mela in Haridwar is scheduled to begin on 13 January 2027, with the first major Amrit Snan (holy dip) on Makar Sankranti, 14 January 2027. This year’s event will last 97 days and include four major royal baths (Shahi Snan). The state government, in agreement with the saints, has elevated the event’s status, calling it a Mahakumbh.
The expulsion comes amid growing divisions within the Akhara, with some monks challenging traditions and questioning the structure and organization of the Ardh Kumbh. Mahant Mohan Bharti stressed that such actions damage the image of Sanatan Dharma and could disrupt the smooth conduct of the festival.
