In a shocking incident that has sent ripples across Chhattisgarh’s police establishment, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) was brutally attacked with a knife in broad daylight in Dantewada. The prime accused is the same woman who had earlier lodged a rape case against the officer, allegedly acting in concert with a retired Army personnel. Investigators say the duo followed the officer for nearly 350 kilometres before executing the attack and holding him hostage for over two hours.
The injured officer has been identified as DSP Tomesh Verma, currently posted in the Maoist-affected Jagargonda area of Sukma district. On the day of the incident, DSP Verma had travelled to Dantewada for official work and was present at the court premises.
Planned Attack After Long पीछा
According to police sources, the accused—Ramshankar Sahu, a resident of Durg district and a retired soldier, along with Rajnish Verma, a woman—had been closely monitoring the DSP’s movements. The two allegedly followed him from Durg to Dantewada, covering a distance of approximately 350 km, with the intent to confront him over an old dispute.
After a brief conversation outside the court complex, the accused managed to get into the DSP’s car. What followed soon turned into a dramatic and violent episode.
Held Hostage at Knife-Point
Police officials stated that the woman suddenly pulled out a knife, held DSP Verma hostage, and forced him to drive the car. For nearly two hours, the officer was allegedly kept at knife-point as the car moved around the city.
When the vehicle reached near a car showroom, the situation escalated further. The retired soldier allegedly attacked the DSP with a knife, inflicting serious injuries to his neck, face, and head. As blood began to ooze profusely, DSP Verma attempted to escape the vehicle to save his life.
The violent scene in the middle of the road triggered panic among passers-by. Acting in self-defence, the injured officer reportedly drew his service revolver. Meanwhile, Dantewada police, alerted about the incident, rushed to the spot and overpowered both accused.
Accused in Custody, Officer Out of Danger
The knife used in the attack has been recovered, and both accused are currently in police custody. Dantewada Superintendent of Police Gaurav Rai confirmed that DSP Verma is out of danger and undergoing treatment at the district hospital, where his condition is stated to be stable.
In a startling revelation, police confirmed that the woman involved in the attack is the same person who had earlier filed a rape case against DSP Verma.
Previous Rape Allegation Under Trial
According to records, the woman had lodged a complaint on December 20, 2024, at Mohan Nagar Police Station in Durg district, alleging that DSP Verma had trespassed into her house, raped her, and assaulted her. The alleged incident was said to have occurred on August 31, 2024. That case is currently pending before the court.
Police officials said all aspects of the incident—including the previous allegations, the motive behind the attack, and the sequence of events—are being thoroughly investigated.
The brazen nature of the attack on a senior police officer has raised serious concerns about personal security and law enforcement safety, prompting calls for strict and swift legal action against those involved.
