In a shocking incident highlighting serious security concerns, a 35-year-old woman was shot at close range while riding a motorcycle with her husband in Loni area of Ghaziabad, barely 50 metres from the Lalbagh police outpost.
The incident occurred on Sunday evening in Lalbagh Colony, when the victim, identified as Sanjana Devi, was returning home from a local vegetable market with her husband Harishankar, a private company employee working in Delhi. According to the husband, after crossing the police outpost and moving a short distance ahead, an unidentified assailant fired at Sanjana from behind.
The bullet struck her in the back, causing her to lose balance and fall from the motorcycle. She was rushed to a nearby hospital, from where she was later referred to Guru Tegh Bahadur (GTB) Hospital in Delhi due to her critical condition.
Following the incident, anger spread among local residents. On Monday morning, hundreds of people gathered outside the Lalbagh police outpost, questioning the police over alleged negligence and demanding swift action against the culprits.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (Ankur Vihar) Gyan Prakash Rai said that police teams are scanning CCTV footage from nearby areas and conducting investigations from multiple angles. “Strict action will be taken once the accused are identified,” he assured.
Family members have expressed suspicion against a neighbour, and a formal complaint has been submitted to the police. The motive behind the attack is yet to be ascertained.
Police officials stated that the condition of the injured woman remains serious and that efforts are underway to arrest those responsible for the crime.
